There was a lot of uproar over that episode of comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube show ‘India’s Got Latent’, in which

Social media influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, who came as a guest, made a lewd joke about parents to a contestant. There was a sensation in the whole country. FIR was registered. Samay Raina deleted all the episodes of his show from YouTube. Ranveer has apologized twice so far. Amidst all this, now the government has also become strict.  Strict instructions have been given regarding content on OTT platforms and social media

The Center has asked OTT platforms to refrain from obscene content outside the scope of the law. A directive has been issued to OTT (Over-the-Top) platforms and social media platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked them to strictly follow the code of conduct prescribed under the IT (Information Technology) Rules-2021 while publishing content. This also requires strict adherence to age in content.

Complaints have been received regarding “India got latent”

The ministry also asked the self-regulatory bodies of OTT platforms to take appropriate action proactively on violation of the code of conduct. The ministry said that it has received complaints from MPs and statutory organizations about the alleged dissemination of obscene content by some OTT and social media platforms. Also, public complaints have also been received.

The consultation said, ‘In view of these things, it is advised that OTT platforms, while broadcasting content,should follow the various provisions of the laws and the code of conduct prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021, including strict adherence to the age-based classification of content prescribed under the code of conduct.’

Do not broadcast content prohibited by law

It states that among other things in the code of conduct, OTT platforms are expected not to broadcast any content prohibited by law. Also, do age-based classification of content based on the general guidelines given in the schedule of rules and also exercise due caution and discretion.  This advisory has been issued in the wake of the Supreme Court’s suggestion to regulate content on social media platforms. The apex court had underlined the lack of provision in the law in the matter of sharing content on platforms like YouTube.
