Pankaj, who hails from Gopalganj in Bihar, used to write Tiwari instead of Tripathi before his name. Both the surnames are written for the same class belonging to the Brahmin community. Still, there is an interesting story behind Pankaj’s changing his name from Tiwari to Tripathi. He recently told about this,
‘My father Pandit Banaras Tiwari and his two brothers Pandit Ram Naresh Tripathi and Pandit Kashinath Tripathi lived in the village. Baba (father) kept his surname Tiwari and my uncle kept it Tripathi. One of my Babas became a professor (Pandit Ram Naresh Tripathi) and another uncle (Pandit Kashinath Tripathi) became a big officer in Patna Secretariat. When I was filling the board form for class 10th, I felt that there must be some surname behind the success. At that time, I slowly changed my surname to Tripathi and Babuji’s name also to Banaras Tripathi. (Laughing) So I am the first son who has changed his father’s surname.’
