The Story of ‘The Storyteller’
‘The Storyteller’ is actually based on Satyajit Ray’s short story ‘Golpo Boliye Tarini Khuro’. At the center of the story is a storyteller who is hired by a rich businessman. This businessman has insomnia. He cannot sleep. Therefore, this storyteller tells him stories at night to help him sleep. But the twist in the story comes when we come to know that the real intentions of this businessman are something else.
Tarini Bandopadhyay (Paresh Rawal) is a talented storyteller who never wrote his stories for fear of criticism and rejection. This socialite prodigy from Kolkata has held 75 jobs, changing jobs every six months. After leaving Amrit Prakashan, Tarini comes across a strange advertisement in the newspaper. Ratan Garodia (Adil Hussain), an Ahmedabad businessman, is looking for a storyteller to tell him bedtime stories. He suffers from insomnia. Despite treatments like sleeping pills and counting sheep, he is no longer able to do so.
Well, now Tarini comes to Ahmedabad, where a new journey begins for him. He starts telling stories to the businessman. But when his real intentions are revealed, everything starts falling apart. To know what happens next in the story, you will have to watch the film.The Storyteller
‘The Storyteller’ Movie Review
The film is a tale of business versus art. It speaks strongly on topics like plagiarism, self-discovery and overcoming self-doubt. Director Anant Narayan Mahadevan has written the screenplay for the film along with Kireet Khurana. With strong acting and a great storyline, the film takes you to the soothing and charming surroundings of Kolkata and Ahmedabad.The Storyteller
Garodia plagiarizes to woo his ex-girlfriend Saraswati (Revathi). He gets Tarini’s stories published in his name in a local Gujarati magazine as Saraswati values ββart more than money. There is a dialogue in the film where Garodia says, “Saraswati does not like Lakshmi.” There is also a moment in the film when Tarini is introduced as Garodia’s business partner. He quips, “He makes cotton, I spin yarn.”
The charm of this film lies in its slow pace and aesthetics. Yes, it is also true that the pace of the film may not appeal to many viewers. The stories that Tarini narrates, like a hundred-year-old tree in the Aravalli forests and a spy pigeon during World War II, are interesting. However, the director has failed to show these stories on-screen. But one exciting thing about the film is that it keeps its plot twists hidden till the end. When the secret is finally revealed, you are shocked.
Paresh Rawal has done a great job as a Bengali who loves maachh (fish) and pujo (Durga Puja), who takes every opportunity to criticize capitalism. He has a powerful dialogue on plagiarism, ‘Nakal ke liye bhi akal chahiye’, in which he tricks Goradia.The Storyteller
Adil Hussain is equally charming as an insecure businessman. His character is always trying to show himself as an intellectual. Revathi, in her small role, is good. Jayesh More plays Manikchand, the servant in the Garodia house, and Tannishtha Chatterjee as the librarian, who also makes a strong impression as Tarini’s friend.The Storyteller
Why watch- The pace of the film is a little slow, but the thrill at the end and the strong performance of the actors make it worth watching.The Storyteller
