In history, we have read a whole syllabus about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but we do not get to read much about his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Director Laxman Utekar’s film ‘Chhaava’ depicts the valor of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, due to which he was named Chhaya (lion cub). The one who kept the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on his toes for nine years. The one on whose one roar the Marathas united to give a tough fight to the Mughal Sultanate.  The story of the film Lakshman is based on the Marathi novel ‘Chhava’ by the famous Marathi novelist Shivaji Sawant.

Story of ‘Chhaava

In the story, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has passed away and the emperor of the Mughal Empire Aurangzeb feels that now there is no one left to defeat him in the Deccan. He will now be able to rule the Marathas single-handedly. But he was not at all aware that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s twenty-four-year-old fearless and brave son Sambhaji aka Chhava (Vicky Kaushal) is determined to carry forward his father’s dream of Swaraj. Sambhaji’s wife (Rashmika Mandanna) is also standing with her brave king to fulfill this dream.

Sambhaji, along with his commander, Sir Lashkar alias Hambirao Mohite

(Ashutosh Rana) and brave soldiers, attack Burhanpur, an important stronghold of Aurangzeb’s sultanate. The army of Maratha heroes reminds the Mughal sultanate of its childhood. Only after this Aurangzeb, his daughter (Diana Penty) and the Mughals’ huge army come to know about Sambhaji’s prowess. After this first victory, Sambhaji and his mighty army keep attacking various strongholds of Aurangzeb’s sultanate for nine years and destroying his strategy.

Chhaava

Now Sambhaji had become such a thorn for Aurangzeb that he could not remove him despite all his diplomatic moves. But then Mahaveer Sambhaji, fearless like the roar of a lion and agile like the wind, is deceived by his own people.  His arch enemy Aurangzeb, who is lying in wait in Sangameshwar, captures him. After all the soul-stirring physical tortures by Aurangzeb, will Chhava surrender to his enemy? To know this, you will have to watch the film. Trailer of ‘Chhava’

‘Chhaava’ Movie Review

Director of films like ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, ‘Mimi’ and ‘Luka Chuppi’, Laxman Utekar talks about an untold historical period, which has been summed up in just a few sentences in history. However, recently Thakur Anoop Singh’s Marathi film ‘Dharmrakshak Mahavir Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’, based on Metha Deshmukh’s book ‘Life and Death of Sambhaji Maharaj’, was also quite popular. ‘Chava’ also moves forward on the same lines, but Laxman Utekar decorates this historical story on a huge canvas.

The first hair-raising war scene of the film itself sets its mood. It also establishes what an amazing aggressive warrior the fearless and fearless Chhava is. The film takes time to establish Chhava, his bravery and characters in the first half, but the story becomes thrilling in the second half.  Although the director’s entire focus has been on showing Chhava’s bravery, that is why not much work has been done on Chhava’s backstory and due to this the film lacks a solid story. Yes, all the action sequences of the film are lively, spectacular and stylish, whose choreography is commendable.

The guerilla technique with which Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s small army frees Aurangzeb’s army is worth watching. The climax war sequence is the soul of the film, in which Sambhaji does not kneel despite all the tortures. The film also has whistle-worthy dialogues like ‘Hum shor nahi karte, seedha shikar karte hain’.

In this film adorned with AR Rahman’s music, ‘Aaya Re Toofaan’ is in accordance with the subject, but on the other hand a song like ‘Jaane Tu’ seems odd according to that era. The background score has supported the film a lot.  Laxman himself is a seasoned cinematographer, yet he has handed over the responsibility of cinematography to Saurabh Goswami and it has to be admitted that his camerawork enriches the film.

In terms of acting, it would not be wrong to say that Vicky Kaushal

has given his all to bring this historical character alive on screen. Vicky Kaushal has got the best opening and climax scene of his career, in which he has proved to be unmatched. He has brought alive on screen the warrior who roars like a lion. His passion for Swaraj is clearly visible. This will be called the best performance of his career.

Akshay Khanna has also done a wonderful job as Aurangzeb, the permanent enemy of Chhava. Akshay’s one-liners, expressions and prosthetic makeup make his role memorable. Ashutosh Rana has lived the role of Sir Lashkar in a very impressive manner, while Vineet Kumar’s character in the role of Kavi Kalash touches the heart.

Female characters do not get much space in the film. A capable actress like Divya Dutta has been wasted. Actress Rashmika Mandana has done justice to her character, but her dialogue delivery is a bummer. But Diana Penty’s role is disappointing. Apart from four-five dialogues, she had nothing to do. The supporting cast is strong.
